Pros and Cons of trailering your sports car to a racetrack
Could you, should you trailer your sports car to a racetrack instead of just drive it? Here’s some pros and cons:
Pros
- Lots of storage space – helmet, tools, overnight bags, tyres, jacks…all easily taken with a car + trailer.
- Another transport option – your partner or friend has transport while your car is on track, or if it’s a 4×4, you can go touring the day before or after.
- Base car – at the track you can put valuables in your towcar and lock it, if a touring 4×4 use it to charge batteries, deploy an awning etc.
- Easily carry additional fuel either on trailer or in the towcar.
- The towcar is almost certainly a more comfortable long-distance drive than the sports car, even when towing
- Track car can be prepped ready to roll off trailer onto track
- If you have any form of problem such as mechanical failure you can get the car back home, or take someone else’s car home if they have problems.
- Reduced mileage on your sports car
- Reduce change of puncturing expensive sports tyres
- Trailer generally useful for other duties such as tip runs, moving house, shifting large objects.
- Worst case, sometimes you can just track the towcar…
Cons
- Need to own, borrow or rent a trailer
- Storage of the trailer at your house
- Run costs of a trailer – maintenance, insurance
- Parking may be limited at your event accommodation
- Extra fuel cost, more than the sports car alone
- Loading and unloading the car – four times, two loads, two unloads (but less time spent packing the track car itself)
- You need a towcar!
