When not to use social media

Today, everything anyone does is on the socials. That has many positives, as for those of us Gen X and older we often don’t have photographs of treasured times. But, photos which we’d rather exist, don’t exist and we’re glad not to be embarrassed.

But sometimes use of socials can go well beyond embarrassment, At motorsport events we’re told “don’t post photos of crashes” and the reason is that family might find out via your unthinking post.

How’d you like to be scrolling through your feed, past pics of cars and memes, then up comes an excited post of a crumpled against the wall…which you recognise? Crash pics aren’t banned to save the driver embarrassment, they’re banned to save the family from agony. Doesn’t matter if it’s minor, you know that, they don’t.

This social media pic situation was a reality for Hannah’s Blue Butterflies Road Safety Awareness. Hannah was 19 when she died in a rural head-on.
